Elsevier Inoculants of Plant Growth-promoting Bacteria for Use in Agriculture
نویسنده
چکیده
An assessment of the current state of bacterial inoculants for c ontemporary agriculture in developed and developing countries is critically evaluated from the point of view of their actual status and future use. Special emphasis is given to two new concepts of inoculation, as yet unavailable commercially: (i) synthetic inoculants under development for plant-growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) (Bashan and Holguin, 1998), and (ii) inoculation by groups of associated bacteria. This review contains: A brief historical overview of bacterial inoculants; the rationale for plant inoculation with emphasis on developing countries and semiarid agriculture, and the concept and application of mixed inoculant; discussion of microbial formulation including optimization of carrier-compound characteristics, types of existing carriers for in oculants, traditional formulations, future trends in formulations using unconventional materials, encapsulated synthetic formulations, macro and micro formulations of alginate, encapsulation of beneficial bacteria using other materials, regulation and contamination of commercial inoculants, and examples of modem commercial bacterial inoculants; and a consideration of time constraints and application methods for bacterial inoculants, commercial production, marketing, and the prospects of inoculants in modern agriculture. ® 1998 Elsevier Science Inc.

Development ofbioconsortia for optimizing nutrient supplementation through microbes for sustainable tobacco production
Increased interests in low-input agriculture in recent years has seen the growing developmentin the use of commercial biological inoculants to increase the mobilization of key nutrients suchas nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) to enhance their availability to crop plants. The objectives of this field experiment with tobacco were to determine i) reduced rates ofinorganic fertilizer c...
متن کاملPotential use of Iranian rhizobial strains as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and effects of selected strains on growth characteristics of wheat, corn and alfalfa
Abstract Many agricultural researches have been performed to improve soil productivity. Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorus (P) are essential elements which are utilized by the plants in large amounts. Phosphorus can be provided by applying chemical fertilizers. Microorganisms convert insoluble phosphate to the soluble form and some bacteria such as rhizobacteria play an important role in this proces...
متن کاملPlant growth-promoting bacteria as inoculants in agricultural soils.
Plant-microbe interactions in the rhizosphere are the determinants of plant health, productivity and soil fertility. Plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) are bacteria that can enhance plant growth and protect plants from disease and abiotic stresses through a wide variety of mechanisms; those that establish close associations with plants, such as the endophytes, could be more successful in pl...
متن کاملRole of bacterial biofertilizers in agriculture and forestry
Many rhizospheric bacterial strains possess plant growth-promoting mechanisms. These bacteria can be applied as biofertilizers in agriculture and forestry, enhancing crop yields. Bacterial biofertilizers can improve plant growth through several different mechanisms: (i) the synthesis of plant nutrients or phytohormones, which can be absorbed by plants, (ii) the mobilization of soil compounds, m...
متن کاملMining Halophytes for Plant Growth-Promoting Halotolerant Bacteria to Enhance the Salinity Tolerance of Non-halophytic Crops
Salinity stress is one of the major abiotic stresses limiting crop production in arid and semi-arid regions. Interest is increasing in the application of PGPRs (plant growth promoting rhizobacteria) to ameliorate stresses such as salinity stress in crop production. The identification of salt-tolerant, or halophilic, PGPRs has the potential to promote saline soil-based agriculture. Halophytes ar...
